Pour d\u2019aucuns, la possibilit\u00e9 d\u2019\u00e9courter des souffrances intol\u00e9rables participera incontestablement de la bonne mort. Pour d\u2019autres, cette mani\u00e8re d\u2019abr\u00e9ger la vie ou parfois ce qu\u2019il en reste, ne sera jamais bonne. Il ne s\u2019agit pas ici d\u2019entrer dans le d\u00e9bat et moins encore de distinguer doctement une \u00ab&nbsp;bonne&nbsp;\u00bb mort d\u2019une \u00ab&nbsp;belle&nbsp;\u00bb mort. Expression bizarre qui g\u00e9n\u00e9ralement s\u2019apparente aux disparitions brutales, inattendues \u00e0 propos desquelles le ou la d\u00e9c\u00e9d\u00e9(e) n\u2019a \u00e9prouv\u00e9 ni souffrance ni conscience de dispara\u00eetre. Mourir dans son sommeil, le pied&nbsp;! Celle qui continuait de cultiver une pastorale terroriste \u00e0 l\u2019exemple de l\u2019ouvrage de l\u2019oratorien Antoine Yvan, <em>La trompette du ciel qui \u00e9veille les p\u00e9cheurs et les incite \u00e0 se convertir<\/em> (1661)&nbsp;; celle des partisans d\u2019une m\u00e9thode o\u00f9 la mort est pr\u00e9sent\u00e9e moins effrayante que douce comme dans <em>Les saints d\u00e9sirs de la mort<\/em> (1673) du p\u00e8re Lallement. N\u00e9anmoins, m\u00eame dans cette optique, la peur n\u2019\u00e9tait jamais loin. \u00ab&nbsp;Je crains, \u00e9crit le p\u00e8re Jean Crasset au m\u00eame moment, cette dur\u00e9e \u00e9ternelle, bonne ou mauvaise qui je ne puis \u00e9viter et qui me fera entrer dans cette maison d\u2019\u00e9ternit\u00e9. Je crains ce dernier jour qui sera le dernier de mes jours et le premier d\u2019un bonheur ou d\u2019un malheur \u00e9ternel&nbsp;\u00bb. Il convenait donc de s\u2019habituer \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9v\u00e8nement terminal jusqu\u2019\u00e0 l\u2019int\u00e9grer \u00e0 sa propre vie \u00e0 travers de longues m\u00e9ditations sur les signes du macabre, le tombeau, le squelette, le cr\u00e2ne, devenant \u00e0 cet effet des sujets picturaux. Mais aussi d\u2019assister les mourants, de participer \u00e0 des confr\u00e9ries d\u2019agonisants, notamment celles qui prenaient en charge les condamn\u00e9s \u00e0 mort. Toutefois pour certains, la voie la plus s\u00fbre \u00e9tait de m\u00e9priser d\u2019embl\u00e9e la vie et le monde en r\u00e9f\u00e9rence appuy\u00e9e \u00e0 des textes d\u2019Augustin, de Cyprien ou de J\u00e9r\u00f4me. Car si la mort est la pire des punitions, elle demeure hautement d\u00e9sirable puisqu\u2019elle d\u00e9livre enfin le p\u00e9cheur de la vall\u00e9e de larmes. Au milieu du XVIIIe si\u00e8cle, le titre d\u2019un sermon du cur\u00e9 R\u00e9guis l\u2019illustre clairement&nbsp;: \u00ab&nbsp;Qu\u2019est-ce que la mort apr\u00e8s tout&nbsp;? La fin de mille mis\u00e8res&nbsp;\u00bb. Malgr\u00e9 ces exercices propos\u00e9s sur la longue dur\u00e9e, c\u2019est pourtant l\u2019heure du tr\u00e9pas qui reste essentielle. Elle est l\u2019instant d\u2019un accompagnement spirituel et sacramentel indispensable, celui d\u2019une intense invocation \u00e0 saint Joseph, peu \u00e0 peu devenu \u00e0 partir du XVIe si\u00e8cle le patron de la bonne mort, lui dont on pensait qu\u2019il s\u2019\u00e9tait \u00e9teint entour\u00e9 de la sollicitude infinie de Marie et de J\u00e9sus. Pour autant, la repentance ultime, le recours aux anges gardiens ou \u00e0 l\u2019intercession du p\u00e8re du Seigneur pouvaient-ils tout racheter&nbsp;? Le p\u00e8re Jacques Bridaine, c\u00e9l\u00e8bre pr\u00e9dicateur du milieu du XVIIIe si\u00e8cle, ne le pense pas&nbsp;: \u00ab&nbsp;Et moi je vous dis avec saint Augustin que ceux qui meurent comme des saints meurent la plupart comme des r\u00e9prouv\u00e9s. \u00d4 hommes ignorants [\u2026] si vous saviez ce qui s\u2019est pass\u00e9 dans le c\u0153ur de ces pr\u00e9tendus p\u00e9nitents, vous verriez bien que cette mort que vous appelez si sainte, si chr\u00e9tienne n\u2019est au fond qu\u2019une mort funeste et malheureuse. Vous verriez que ce sont d\u2019abominables Judas qui restituent les deniers mais dont l\u2019\u00e9ternelle damnation n\u2019est pas pour cela moins certaine ni moins infaillible&nbsp;\u00bb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>De quoi d\u00e9courager les mieux intentionn\u00e9s jusqu\u2019aux ouvriers de la onzi\u00e8me heure\u00a0! De quoi tourner le dos \u00e0 cette approche interpr\u00e9tative du christianisme o\u00f9 se trouvait probablement tapie la crainte qu\u2019\u00e9prouvaient eux-m\u00eames les gens d\u2019\u00c9glise. De quoi d\u00e9sesp\u00e9rer le chr\u00e9tien de la mis\u00e9ricorde infinie de Dieu. De quoi douter de la conversion toujours possible et sinc\u00e8re de tout individu. De quoi, sombre h\u00e9ritage assum\u00e9 ou non, \u00eatre tent\u00e9 d\u2019\u00e9vacuer vainement de nos vies la mort et ses suites.
